Obituary

Andrew J. Soukup died of natural causes at his home in Yerington on early Friday morning, August 17, 2007. He was 90.

Andrew was born in Wausau, Wisconsin on March 16, 1917 the son of Andrew and Amelia Soukup. At a young age he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed primarily in India during World War II where he obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. After serving his country in the US Army he returned to the United States and traveled the midwest and western states working at various jobs such as a cook, miner and cowboy. While working in a mine in Lovelock, Nevada he cut off part of his finger and was taken to the local hospital. While being treated at the hospital he met Viola Louis his nurse. The two began dating and were later married. The moved to Yerington and raised ten children plus two of Viola's children from a previous marriage. In 1971 Viola died and he raised the children alone, he never remarried.

Andrew worked for the Anaconda mine shortly after arriving in Yerington and retired when the mine closed in 1979. During his retirement he spent his time on his small farm growing alfalfa, working his orchard and raising various animals such as horses, cows, pigs and various birds. andrew lived a busy life but eventually time caught up with him. In 2007 he was told by his cardiologist that he had 2 months to live. He lived 4 months. During those four months he was visited by his 10 children who traveled home from across the west. Andrew was cared for at his home by his children until his death, per his wishes.

Andrew is survived by all his children, Jerry, Dawn, Kathleen, Jack and his wife Susan, Laurel, Cindy and her husband Eric, Lee, Clay and his wife Jaydene, Kirk and his wife Deanne, and Pat and his wife Nancy; twenty - eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

In keeping with Andrew's wishes no memorial service will be held.
May he rest in eternity with his wife and parents.
