Obituary

Ann Perkins Barton, 99, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away on June 22, 2015 in Yerington.

The second of seven children, Ann was born in Keeler, California, on February 20, 1916, to Albert and Anna Perkins. Educated in a one-room schoolhouse for a time, she later graduated from high school in Yerington, Nevada, while working as a cook on the Gallagher Ranch in nearby Mason Valley. Following graduation, she worked as a cook at the Royal Café in Yerington and another restaurant in Coleville, California, and then enrolled at the University of Nevada.

On June 11, 1938, she married Benjamin Clayton Barton. The couple wed at a barbershop in Hawthorne, Nevada, and remained married for 64 years. Ann and Ben owned and partnered on several businesses around Nevada, including the Golden Rule clothing store in Yerington, the Smith Valley Garage in Wellington, and the Country Store outside Carson City. After many years of hard work, they retired in Mason Valley.

Ann weathered the Great Depression, the Second World War, and other challenging times with dignity, spirit, and generosity. She made her home open to the comings and goings of friends and family, cooking for them without complaint, and making a comfortable and orderly place for others to share. Her interests included fashion, interior design, psychology, and philosophy, and she maintained her deep interest in other people, keen power of observation, sharp wit, and remarkable memory throughout her life.

Ann was predeceased by her devoted husband Ben; brothers George, Daniel, and Edward Perkins; sisters Josephine Lommori and Nancy Bozzoli; and niece Belva Farias. She is survived by many relatives, including her brother Charles "Gus" Perkins; daughters Joan Soderstrom, Marianne Morgan, Brenda Barton, Isani Alahan, and Lorie Barton; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Her family and many friends will miss her stories, sense of humor, and affection.

A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 am Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Yerington. Her urn will be buried in the family plot at Valley View Cemetery.
