Obituary

Basil Angelo Quilici passed away Tuesday morning, April 23, 2019 at the South Lyon Medical Center, Yerington.  He was 89.

Basil was born November 27, 1929 to Angelo and Louise (Scossa) Quilici in Yerington, NV.  He spent his early childhood in Smith Valley until his parents took over the Scossa homestead in Mason Valley. Basil started his life long journey with education at the Creamery School.  When that school was closed, he finished his elementary years at Yerington Elementary School in town and then attended and graduated from Yerington High School. He loved sports, especially football.

As the Korean War intensified, he decided to enlist in the US Army and served 18 months on the frontlines. He saw intense action, was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart Medal. After enlistment he returned to his family's ranch. Basil then enrolled at UNR majoring in Secondary Education. Upon graduation from UNR he began his career in education as a PE/social studies teacher and coach at Yerington Intermediate School.  Several years later he earned his masters degree in Education Administration. He then became the principal at Smith Valley Schools, grades 1-12, for several years. In 1969 Basil was chosen to be the principal at Yerington Intermediate School.  He remained the principal of Yerington Intermediate School until his retirement in 1985.

During his time as the Smith Valley principal he met the love of his life, Pauline Ogle, who was teaching second grade.  They dated for several years and were married July 26, 1969.

Basil was a very sociable person and joined Lions Club as a young man and was a life member. He oversaw the Lions Club eyeglass program that provides free eye exams and glasses to those who could not otherwise afford them. He also ensured that the Lions Club mints were stocked at many of the local businesses.

Pauline and Basil were inseparable, they loved to dance, travel, and take jeep rides in the northern Nevada hills. In 1990 he was gained a new title, Papa. He and Pauline would dote on and spoil their three granddaughters, Katie, Abby and Emily.

Basil and Pauline along with Betty and Lee Bryan bought their summer cabin, "The Tiltin' Hilton," near Bridgeport in 1969. This became the epicenter for gatherings, especially for the family's annual Independence Day celebration.

Basil lost the love his life, Pauline, in 2014 and it left an unfillable hole in his heart. For the past two and a half years he has been lovingly cared for by the staff at Mason Valley Residence. Basil is survived by his stepson Tim Ogle, daughter-in-law Leanna, granddaughters Katherine Ogle Aviles, Abby Ogle, and Emily Ogle, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.  In lieu of flowers please donate to the Yerington Lions Club eyeglass program or Yerington Lions Club scholarship fund.

The rosary for Basil is scheduled at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 7:00 pm, Monday April 29. His funeral mass will be said on Tuesday April 30, at 11am at Holy Family with burial to follow at Valley View Cemetery.  Family and friends are invited to sign his online guest book at www.FRFH.net .

Arrangements are under the direction of Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home, 25 Hwy 208 Yerington, NV 89447 (775) 463-2911
