Bernice Caroline Edge passed away after a brief illness on Friday, July 9, 2010 at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in Carson City, Nevada. She was 90.
Bernice was born January 24, 1920 near Delavan, Minnesota the eldest daughter of Joseph and Agnes Lokensgard Kasperson. She attended school in Delavan and graduated from Delavan High School in 1938. She then studied at Mankato Business School where she trained to become a secretary. During this training she worked as a secretary in the Delavan schools.
During World War II she traveled to southern California with her good friend Elsie Abbas (Purdy) and began working with North American Aviation in Inglewood. Near the end of the War she worked for the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy in Mojave. She met Merle Charles Edge in Lancaster where they were living in the same boarding house. They married June 22, 1946 and continued to live in the Lancaster area. They had two children, Anthony (Tony) and Karen.
In 1954 the family moved to Mason Valley, Nevada where they first managed a ranch south of Yerington. Later they moved to Yerington where they owned Edge's Trailer Court for five years. In 1961 they sold the court and bought a home in town.
Bernice was a charter member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Yerington. The initial meeting of the Church was held at the Edge home. She held several offices through the Church and was the Church organist for several years.
She loved reminiscing about her childhood in Minnesota, telling about the cold winters, growing up with her sisters on the family farm, and the people she knew from Delavan. She was especially proud of her Norwegian-American heritage. She enjoyed several hobbies including sewing, knitting, crafts, working puzzles and reading. With Merle she enjoyed sightseeing trips through the southwest and Mexico. For twenty years they wintered in Yuma, Arizona area where they made many friends.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents and Husband, Merle. she is survived by her children, Tony and Karen; her two sisters, Evelyn (Walter) Whitney of Delavan, Minnesota, and Carrie (Raymond) Pearson of La Crosse, Wisconsin; by her sister-in-law Millie (James) Abel of Bakersfield, California and Maxine (Gordon) Tibbs of Hollister, California and a cousin, Yvonne Carlson of Mount Calvary, Wisconsin; also by several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held 9:15 am Thursday, July 15th at the Faith Lutheran Church 12 N. West Street Yerington, the Funeral Service will be at 10:00 am at the Church with Pastor Everett Garwood officiating. Burial will be 2:00 pm Thursday at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley next to her husband, Merle.
