Obituary

DAVID JOHN BARNETT; Well-known Broadcaster and Viet Nam Veteran
David Barnett, a native of Nevada and member of the Nevada Broadcasters Hall of Fame, died of heart failure at the home of his sister, Chere` Brown, in Richmond CA on July 9th 2008. He was 56.
David grew up in Yerington Nevada where he went through his school years and later opened a store called "Stuff" that sold musical instruments and memorabilia. Following high school, Barnett enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served in Viet Nam. He also served in both the Nevada & California Army National Guard as a broadcast journalist specialist for over 27 years. David was very proud to have served his country for so many years and was seldom seen without some army emblem on his person.
Many radio listeners knew David as "Johnny Baron, the man with a plan", which was his stage name as a disc jockey for KBUL 98 FM radio in Reno. He also worked at Nevada stations KBET, KPTL, KROW/KNEV and KROI/KPLY/KKMR. In his career, he held many positions such as DJ, public affairs director, news director, music director, program director, and station manager. David was honored as an inductee in the Nevada Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame on August 24th, 2002. He loved radio and the Hall of Fame honor was one of his proudest moments.

Barnett was an active supporter and contributor to The Children's Miracle Network through Barnett Beverages, his beverage distribution business which serviced Washoe Medical Center in Reno.

David will be missed greatly by his survivors including his two daughters Tanya Willey and Heather Barnett, his four grandchildren (Lexie, Laurie, and Colton Willey and Austin Nikkols), his sister Chere` Brown, his brother Dan Barnett, and his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. His brother says, "David was mostly about love. He lived for it and he died with a lot of it around him. Those who were close to him will always remember his spirit of enthusiasm for everything he did."

A memorial service open to all who remember David will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26th at the Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home 25 Hwy 208 Yerington, Nevada. Burial will be in the family plot of Valley View Cemetery.
