throughout Indian country.
Ourmom attended Walker River School during November 16, 1937 and the Stewart
Indian School for a short time at age 12 and lived in Hawthorne with her mom Mamie and
worked for the Larry Masini's store. Mom married Orin Carrera Sr. October 08,1943 at the
Old Indian Methodist Mission Church located on Bridge Street in Yerington, NV.,marriage
witnesses were Joe McCann and Chester Fredericks with Pastor Rev. Burnett presiding the
marriage. Their first child Carolyn was born in Schurz, NV in 1944. After dad's Army
discharge they lived at Missouri Flat in Yerington. As time went on other siblings and
family members lived in our home. She loved her family and helped them. Dad bought her
a pink 1953 Oldsmobile Rockett 88 and she drove and loved this car. She was so happy. As
mom lived during the times of no running water, electricity, wood stoves, or heated irons,
she used an outside toilet house and had to carry her drinking water. In 1959 her uncle
Henry Tom helped the family build a wood stick home. In 1961 mom had her first TV,
which was powered by a gas generator. It was hard happy times of her life, a proud lady
taking care of her family listening to her favorite music, like, Elvis) Presley, Fats Domino,
Freddy Fender and country)Music. She) enjoyed cooking and was a great cook always
wearing an apron. She'd cook homemade dinners of jackrabbit, fried potatoes, venison
with deserts of apple and pumpkin pies;jellies, yeast 3 a clover bread and she even won a
chili bean and fry bread contest at the Walker River Pine Nut Festival.
On June 27, 1969 she moved)into her new trib) HUD selfabuilt home located at
Campbell Ranch and her dreams came true. She loved her yard and liked the trees, flowers,
lawn where she could walk around and enjoy her day.
Our mom, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, relation was a proud happy person with
her life. She always looked nice with her shinny broaches, her hair in pin curls, and a scarf
and her hair sometimes in a bun. She knew how to curl her hair using rags. Our family
made her happy with greeting cards during the year and if a $20 dollar bill was enclosed
she'd just grin. She'd say, "Oops, fingers are)itchy, got to go to Dini's)Lucky)Club." In the
past with her husband Orin)Sr. they would enjoy their friends at the C &)C Liquor Store, and
she'd playing slots while her husband visited his friends. As an elder she drove her
car to town, where) she would shop. Often she would bring her grannies, who she loved
with heart of joy, to school and school events and then sometimes to the swimming pool
and then to the Country Cone for ice cream and then finally home. Or she could be seen at
local yard sales. Our mom loved the people and people loved her with hugs and kind
words. She had many friends. Now)she rests with our Father in Heaven whom she loved
and believed in throughout her life.
