Derek Elmer Bartels passed away, Sunday, March 18, 2018 at South Lyon Medical Center, Yerington.  He was 60.

Derek was born on September 28, 1957, in Cedarville California the son of Marvin and Dorothy Bartels. The growing family moved to Gardnerville in 1963 were he attended and graduated Douglas High School. Derek married and divorced twice, all though he remained friends with Barbra and Kathy Ann over the years.

Derek lived and worked in Montana and Wyoming for several years, before returning to Nevada. He has resided in the Yerington area for over 20 years.

Derek was preceded in death by his father Marvin (Butch) Elmer Bartels, on October 28 ^th 2017; and a sister Jan Elizabeth Bartels, who passed away as an infant. Derek is survived by his mother Dorothy Bartels Jones; his siblings; John Kelvin Bartels, his wife Kathy, Marvie Lynn Womack, Catherine Lydia Wold, her husband Don,  Kent William Bartels and his wife Tina; also his aunt, Gladys, and many nieces and nephews. Derek is also survived by lifetime friends, Lorraine Ross, Waylon & Christina Justice and there 3 children Melody, William, and Derek's best buddy Chase Justice.

Although his life seemed to end too soon Derek lived every day the way he wanted to live it. While embarking on our many adventures, Derek would often say "god hates a coward" and my reply would be "he must love you then".  Derek had a very strong work ethic, he enjoyed nature, and he loved to fish. He was very well known throughout Yerington and the Carson Valley area. Derek was a friend to many and will always be remembered by those who knew him. He will be missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Derek on April 14 ^th 2018 at 4:00pm at 57 Tucker Lane, Yerington. There will also be a celebration of life held in Gardnerville in June that date to be announced later.  Family and friends are invited to sign his on line guest book at www.FRFH.net .
