Our beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and uncle Douglas Dean Quintero passed away on Wednesday evening, March 17, 2010 surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer at the Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City, Nevada. He was 71.
Douglas was born in Schurz, Nevada on August 2, 1938 the son of Patricio and Jennie (Quartz) Quintero. He was a member of the Walker River Paiute Tribe.
Doug attended school in Schurz and Yerington High School. He served proudly in the United States Marine Corps. He was a well respected and well known member of the community. In addition to being a lifelong rancher, he had a tireless work ethic, a generous spirit and a kind heart. He was an avid outdoorsman, loving to hunt, fish, prospect, cowboy, chase mustangs, farm, ranch, cut wood, mechanic and pick pinenuts. He took a strong interest in the youth of the community, whether it be a coach, mentor, leader or just as a friend helping young people become better citzens. Doug loved horses and will always be remembered for the fine ones he raised. He actively served on various Councils, Boards, Committees and Clubs He first served 5 years in the USMC, also served on the Tribal Council, Housing Authority, Enterprise Board, Tax Department, Law and Order committee, Land and Water board. He was the first president of the Rodeo committee and a member of the Cattlemen's Association. He was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association for 30 years as well as a member of the Volunteer Fire Department. Doug coached little league, Pee-wee basketball, grade school basketball in addition to Men's and Women's basketball. He retired from the Mineral County School District after 30 years. He was named Employee of the Year in 94-95. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Alberta (Cookie) Quintero, sons, Denny (Amy), Donnie (Kim); foster son, Frank (Sluggo) Trujillo; a brother, Pancho Quintero and four grandchildren, Tanya Shae, Brandon, Karmen, and Sim Quintero; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Whitney and Roland Quartz; sisters, Beatrice Q. Guzman, and Patricia (Padu) Brown.
A Visitation will be held Friday, March 26th, 6-8 pm at the Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home 25 Hwy 208 Yerington. His funeral service will be held 10:30 am Saturday, March 27th at the Walker River Tribal Gym in Schurz with burial following at the Schurz Cemetery.
