Edward L. Perkins, son of Albert and Anna Perkins, and one of The Greatest Generation, died on March 16, 2015, in Yerington, Nevada after 97 years of a well-lived life.
Born in Wabuska, Nevada on December 22, 1917, Ed started school in a one-room schoolhouse at Thompson, Nevada before graduating as valedictorian of the Yerington High School Class of '36. During high school, Ed worked on several ranches in Mason Valley to help see his family through the Great Depression.
Ed served his country during WWII in the Army Air Force's Air Transport Command as a flight engineer on C-47 cargo planes, spending much of his time in Alaska. After receiving an honorable discharge, Ed returned to Nevada and started his career in 1946 as a laborer with Sierra Pacific Power Company. He rose to the level of district superintendent in 1966 before retiring in 1974. During those years, many a dinner was interrupted by lightning storms when Ed would be forced to take his leave and make sure power came back on in Yerington. Ed entered into a loving marriage with June Julian on July 19, 1952, which lasted until her death in 2000.
Ed, a member of the Lion's Club, was elected its president in 1967 and served concurrently on the Board of Directors for the Mason Valley Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of Toastmasters International and the Sierra Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross. Ed enjoyed reading westerns, playing many games ranging from horseshoes to dominoes, fishing, hunting, and travelling the West with June. They kicked up dust all over Nevada with their truck and camp trailer, oftentimes with relatives and friends who tagged along.
Ed was predeceased by his wife, June; his parents; his brothers George and Daniel; his sisters Josephine Lommori and Nancy Bozzoli; and his niece Belva Farias. He is survived by his sister Ann Barton; his brother Charles Perkins (Jacklyn); his adopted son Daniel Perkins; his granddaughters Miska Angelides, Gina Atencio, and Piia Thomas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private family services will be held at the Valley View cemetery. Donations may be made in Edward's name to a charity of one's choice.
