Ethel Fredericks Schmid passed away at home in Fernley, Nevada on Thursday evening, June 30, 2011 where she lived for the past five years with her granddaughter Marva and her family. Ethel was 104.
Ethel was born to John and Ida Fredericks on September 10, 1906 on the family ranch in Sweetwater, Nevada where she spent her childhood and younger years. She married Clarence Schmaling on April 15, 1927 in Carson City, Nevada. They lived in Reese River on the Schmaling family ranch. They had two daughters, Lorraine and Frances. The family moved to Ione, Nevada where Clarence went to work in the mine. In January 1939, Clarence died in a mining accident, and Ethel and her two daughters moved back to Smith Valley. Ethel then married Alfred Schmid, and the two of them owned and operated the Central Bar in Smith. The two then began delivering mail in Smith, Wellington, East Walker, and Mason Valley making life-long friends along the way.
Ethel loved to be outdoors whether it was fishing in the valley creeks and rivers, pine nut hunting in the mountain ranges, or tending to her gardens at home. She loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, needlepoint, and many other crafts all of which she shared with her family. To Ethel there was nothing more important than family and she lived her life making sure her family was loved, happy, and healthy. She touched many, many lives during her 104 years leaving many happy memories along the way.
Ethel is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Henry, and Thomas; sisters Emma, Helen, and Edith; her husbands Clarence and Alfred; and daughters Lorraine Wines and Frances Miner. She is survived by her granddaughters Anne Erkkila, Susan Cochran (Don) both of Yerington, and Marva Cleven (John) of Fernley. Great-grandchildren, Tracy Marriott, Erin and Colleen Cochran, and Hailey and Ethan Cleven. Great-great grandchildren, Alicia, Christopher, Kevin, and Kyle Marriott, great-great-great granddaughter Victoria Marriott; and several nieces and nephews.
Ethel's Funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 10:00 am at the Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home 25 Hwy 208 Yerington, Nevada. A private family internment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Smith, Nevada.
