Obituary

Floyd Ray "Tom" Thomas passed away at his home in Yerington on Thursday morning, June 18, 2009. He was 82.

He was born in Los Angeles, California on January 30, 1927 the son of Davis and Eva Thomas. He was a Veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II and in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Roberta in Ventura on February 24, 1952. He and his wife raised their children in Ventura. In 1975, Tom and Roberta moved to Fallon, Nevada where they resided for 9 years. They lived in Smith Valley for 20 years eventually settling in Yerington. Never content to be idle, Tom spent his 'retirement' years building custom homes and immersing himself in the projects of his family and friends. With strenghth and stamina that defied his years, he always the first to offer a hand, even to a stranger, and never expected anything in return. He simply took on the projects of others as his own. Tom loved to fly. A private pilot for over 40 years, he was a member of the Civil Air Patrol and his Tri Pacer 160 served as regular transportation for his grandchildren to and from his home in Smith Valley. In recent years, Tom's health may have slowed his pace, but not his drive. In the months before his death, he could be found in his workshop in Yerington, framing a duplex in Texas, or offering his advise to the crew on a neighborhood construction site.

Tough, stubborn and adored by his family he is survived by his wife, Roberta of Yerington; his children, David Thomas of Santa Barbara, CA, Linda (Rich) Totten of Cary, NC, Thelma (Ken) Derwin of Fredericksburg, TX and Janice Clark of Ventura, CA; his 7 grandchildren, Lisa (David) Castranio of Cary, NC, Sandy Townend of Raleigh, NC, Tracie (Fred) Ormonde of Solvang, CA,
Jennifer (David) Canty of Los Angeles, CA, Haley (Dan) Onder of Parker, CO, Meagan (Ralph) Guida of Anaheim Hills, CA, and Joshua Clark of Newport Beach, CA; 2 great grandchildren, Brittany Smith of Cary, NC and Jonah Onder of Parker, CO.

Private family service were held with his cremains being buried at the Valley View Cemetery. A Celebration of Life service to honor Tom will be scheduled for a future date.
