Frances was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 27, 1910 the daughter of James and Rita Millar.  Shortly after her birth the family moved to Long Beach, California where her father was employed as a purser for a shipping company.  At the age of three her father died and the family moved to Hawthorne, Nevada to be with her grandparents, Alfred and Ada McCarthy.  The McCarthy's were in the newspaper business and owned the Walker River Bulletin.  Frances' Mother, was the first female in Nevada to hold an elective position, and one of the first women to be elected to the Nevada Legislature in 1923.  When Frances was about ten the family moved to Yerington where her grandfather and his son, Jack owned the Yerington Times newspaper.  The paper was sold to Walter Cox of the Mason Valley News which still operates today.  Frances graduated from Yerington High School in 1927 and entered the University of Nevada where she was a member of the Tri Delta Sorority.  She earned her teaching degree and returned to Yerington to teach second grade.

On August 13, 1933 Frances married John H. 'Jack' Burns.  They owned and operated the Lyon county Market grocery store for over thirty years, the store was sold in 1970.

In 1944 at the height of World War II, Jack joined the Navy, at that time they had four children (John, Bob, Kathy and Tom) and one about to be born, Pat, who entered the world just minutes after Frances returned home from taking Jack to catch the troop train for boot camp.  Jack was so excited that he told Navy personnel that his new son was named Mike; seven years later after Mary and Joe, there was finally a Mike.

When Jack returned home in 1945 they continued to operate and develop the grocery business.  They were very much involved in their children's education, community affairs and their church.  Frances and Jack were married for 57 years when he passed away September 1, 1990.

Frances had several noteworthy family members in her background; Julius J. Holmes (her great grandfather) was a Superintendent of Construction for the Virginia and Truckee Railway.  Alfred J. McArthy (her grandfather) was one of Nevada's early newspaper personalities, he also served in the Nevada Legislature.  Rita Millar (her Mother) was the first woman elected to public office in Nevada, and was elected to the Legislature in 1923. She also served as Deputy State Treasurer for several years.  Her uncle, Jack McCarthy served in the legislature as the Nevada State Printer for several terms.

Frances is survived by her children, Bob and his wife, Janie; Kathy, Tom and his wife, Judy, Pat, Mary, Joe and his wife, Mary, and Mike and his wife Fran;  her grandchildren, Rob, Tia (Bob) Collins, Maggie (Joe) Traverso, Mitchell (Corinne), Jennifer, Molly, Ryan (Melissa), Jack II (Laura), Charley, Connor, Meghan (Jason) Holmes; her great grandchildren, Mason, Walker, Carter, Hayley, Jacob, Leah, Sydney and Courtney.  Frances was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jack, her son, John, her grandaughter, Julie, her daughter-in-law, Holley and son-in-law, George and a great grandson, Christopher.

A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm Friday, June 8th at the Holy Family Catholic Church. Her Memorial Mass will be held 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 9th at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Yerington. Inurnment will be in the family plot at Valley View Cemetery.

We know that Frances is in a better place today!  We had her for much longer than most, and for that we are thankful.  She will be greatly missed by all that knew her, especially her family.   She was a special person.
