Gerald B. King passed away early Thursday morning, February 1, 2007 at the South Lyon Medical Center Long Term Care in Yerington. He was 81.
He was born in Battle Mountain, Nevada on June 21, 1925 the son Roy and Ida (Weaver) King. He grew up and attended schools in Battle Mountain. He met and married his childhood sweetheart, Lois Lannue, in Winnemucca, Nevada on June 21, 1943. Shortly after they were married he was drafted in the Navy to fight in World War II. He spent 2 years fighting for his country and on December 25, 1945 he was given his honorable discharge from the Navy as a Machinist's Mate Third Class. He returned home after the War to meet, for the first time, his son Myrl Roy. The started there new family life in Battle Mountain. He went to work for the Silver Cloud Mine for a short time and then took a job at the Getchell Mine. He was there a short time and then went to work for Lander County as the Road Superintendent for about four years. He then changed jobs and went to work for Wells Cargo which he would have for the next 30 years. In 1955 during the summer he hauled sulfur from the Leviathan Mine to Weed Heights, Nevada. In 1959, he was appointed foreman and they moved to Lovelock, nevada where they lived for 4 years. In 1963 Wells Cargo transferred Jerry to Globe, Arizona where he worked for 1 year. He was then transferred to Luning, Nevada as superintendent for Wells Cargo. In 1980 he was again transferred to Carlin, Nevada which was his last job before he retired. In 1985, they made their final move to Yerington, Nevada where they would be close to his son and his family. Jerry was very proud of his family, he was dedeciated and loving, not only to his wife and family but his special friends. He was always there to help in a time of need. The frequent family gatherings were a special time in his life and he loved fishing with his sister and family in Strike. He also loved following his granddaughters and his great grandchildren around watching them play sports. he was there #1 fan. Jerry was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and also a member of the Copper Hills Good Sam Chapter for the past twenty years and served as president in 1994-1995. In 2000, they were awarded a plaque for never missing a meeting or campout for the whole year. He loved camping with his family and friends. He was the best Pancake maker in the West. He would sit up many nights around the campfire telling stories. His presence in the lives of his family and friends will be greatly missed.
Jerry is survived by his son Myrl and wife Charlotte; his sister, Dell Sumin; his granddaughters, Debbie (Jeff) Rife, Dena (John) Nicholas and Dona (Bobby) Tracy; great grandchildren, Katie Nicholas, Ashley Rife, Ryan Rife, Michael Nicholas, Daren and Lukas Tracy all of Yerington; numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, his parents and his brother, Phillip.
A celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, February 17, 2007 at the Yerington Vineyard Fellowship Church 307 Broadway Yerington with Pastor Dave Chism officiating.
