Obituary

Glen Hiram Smith passed away at his home on Friday, January 26, 2007. He was 86.

He was born November 19, 1920 in Yerington the 2nd of 5 children of Chester and Lola Smith. He attended Simpson Grammer School and Smith Valley High School, graduating in 1938. After graduation he rode the train to Chicago to learn how to make television sets, but came home when asked to start selling them. He worked at a grocery distributor in Reno making deliveries all over the area, and spent a short time working in Oakland while staying with an aunt and uncle. He joined the Army Air Corps in June 1942, learning to fly in southern California and Arizona. He flew with his squadran to North Africa to begin his active duty in December 1943 then later moved to England where he flew paratroopers, gliders, and supply missions into Europe. He returned home in 1945 after the war ended. While farming with his brother, Bill in Smith Valley he met and married Barbara Joyce'Bobbie' Carlson from Glendale, California in July 1950. He spent the rest of his life farming, raising livestock and raising his family on the ranch in Smith Valley. During that time, he was active in many community organizations including the Simpson Colony Ditch Co., Smith Valley Fire Department, School Board, Soil Conservation Service, ASCS, Nevada Hay Growers Assoc., Lyon County Planning Board and Board of Equalization, State Energy Advisory Board and the Smith Valley Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie of 56 years, his sons, Dan and his wife Shawna and Jim and his wife Tina all of Wellington; his six grandchildren, Ryan, Tenille, Erica, Arianne, Sarah and John; his brother, Bill and his wife Jan and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Earl and Duane and his sister, Betty Werner.

A memioral service will be held 11:00 am Friday, February 2nd at the Smith Valley United Methodist Church with Pastor Tom Walburn officiating. Doantions may be made in his name in lieu of flowers to the Smith Valley Rotary Club Box 357 Wellington, NV 89444.
