Pan Scatena passed away peacefully, with family at her side, on December 31,200 at her Nazareth House residence in San Rafael, CA at age 96. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Pan will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
She was born in Reno, NV on January 21, 1912 the daughter of Elias and Pearl Dickey Wartman. Her great-grandfather, Jonathan Keeney, came across the country in a covered wagon, one of the renowned pioneers of his day, and for the Bicentennial a mountain pass in Oregon was named Keeney Pass in his honor. While working in the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hawthorne, NV in the early 30's, she met Jim Scatena, a native of Yerington, NV and a graduate of Stanford University, and they married in 1935. Although most of her adult life was spent in the Bay Area, her native state of Nevada stayed dear to her heart.
One would describe Pan as gracious, loving, kind, unselfish, and humble with an inner strength. She was of very strong faith, having converted to Catholicism just a few years after her marriage. She very much enjoyed her last four years as a resident of Nazareth House, under the loving care of the Sisters of Nazareth, and in close proximity to much of her family. She was an active member of the Auxiliary of the Little Sisters of the Poor, and an avid and excellent bridge player.
She celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary in 1985 with Jim, who passed away in 1991. Most would agree that they were the perfect couple, he the outgoing and visible personality in pursuit of his business, with considerable devotion of time to Italian and Catholic organizations, she always in loving support..
She is survived by their son Jim (Joan) Scatena, Jr. of Mill Valley, daughter Valerie (George) Silvestri of Novato and daughter Lauren (Steve) Santucci of Hayward, and by two of her sisters, Sally Jenkins from Reno and Ethel Plummer of Carson City. She was pre-deceased by her brother Beverly Wartman and a sister June Price, both of Reno. She is also survived by grandchildren Theresa (Kevin) Griffin, Julie (Steve) Compagno, Jim (Lisa) Scatena III, G. Peter (Libby) Silvestri, Gina (Ben) Silvestri Sanger , Dominic (Melissa) Silvestri, Steve (Peggy McNiel) Santucci, Jr., Amy (Brian) Leonard, Dominic (Kristy) Santucci, and great-grandchildren Jack, Ben, Samantha, Stevie, Gina, Joe, Anna, Alex, Andrew, Carlisle, Laughlin, Bryson, Jacob, Jordan, Kyra, Juliana, Sophia, Vincent, Matthew, Patrick and Isabella.
