Obituary

Jack Bruce Linscott, 94, passed away in Sparks, Nevada, on May 27, 2018 after a brief illness. He was a lifelong Nevada resident, since 1923 when his parents, George Lester "Les" and Lucille (Wines) Linscott moved to their Smith Valley ranch from Bishop, California, where Jack had been born two months earlier.   Jack was the youngest of eight children, all raised on this family ranch during the Great Depression.

Growing up on a sheep, potato, and hay ranch, he learned the value of hard work and honest labor, and kept those ethics throughout his life – and later, when he was still able, he enjoyed the physical activity of cutting and hauling firewood, doing carpentry projects, or just building fence.  Jack graduated from Smith Valley high school in 1941.  In Jun 1942 he married his longtime sweetheart Myra Springmeyer. Within a year they were living in Richmond, Calif., drawn by expanding wartime production and high wages at the Kaiser Shipyards. He worked there as a warehouseman.  In 1943, while in Richmond at the shipyards he was drafted into the US Army.   Although Jack was generally reluctant to talk about his war experiences, he was trained as a Surgery Technician in Jan 1944 at Letterman Hospital, and was assigned to a medical detachment in Europe, where he was in the Battle of the Bulge. Following the end of the war, Jack was honorably discharged.  Back in Reno by 1947, he worked at the Standard station at 4 th & Virginia St, and he played on the Standard team in the city softball league with coworkers and friends like Stu Russell, John Shanks, and Ed Spoon. He also worked for a time at Anaconda Copper in Weed Heights as a diesel mechanic.  In 1962 Jack and Myra built and operated Meadow Market & Hardware, located in south Reno. They sold the store, now the Shop 'N' Go, in 1976.  He volunteered too, being one of the founders of both the Washoe Little League, and the Brown-Huffaker Volunteer Fire Department where he was Asst. Fire Chief. He had an interest in family history, and on a tour of Europe with Myra in 1981, visited England to research his Linscott family heritage. They also traversed Nevada to trace his roots in Elko and the Rubies, visiting places where his Wines ancestors settled ranches and drove stagecoaches, and found that his great grandfather, Leonard Wines, witnessed the treaty with the Shosone Indians on the Humbolt in 1855. He continuously marveled at the strength and tenacity of the pioneers for crossing the Great Basin and the Sierras.  Jack and Myra finally made plans to live in their all time favorite place, Smith Valley. In 1992 they happily returned to the beautiful valley where they grew up.  Myra, his loving wife of 52 years, died in May 1994.  Jack and Marjorie Kay (Keeley) McKay, also of Smith Valley, were married in July 1995.   Sadly Marjorie passed away in 2008.  Jack was patriotic, and he installed a tall flagpole at every place he lived, raising and lowering the US flag with reverence and respect.   He supported veteran groups such as the Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Veterans Guest House, and the National Museum of the United States Army.  He was a Life Member of the Battle Born Patriots Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, and he believed in its goals as a historic, educational, and patriotic organization. He also liked pitching horse shoes, playing the harmonica, and watching John Wayne movies. He was generous and made friends easily. Some of his most recent friendships include the crew at Ken's Shell Automotive in Reno and the breakfast crowd at the Hometown Café in Lemmon Valley.

Jack's parents and siblings all predeceased him. He had three brothers and four sisters: George, Ernest, Timothy, Clara, Carrie, Mildred, and Lillis. His oldest son, Jeffrey Alan Linscott, and both his wives preceded him in death.

Jack is survived by 3 children, all by his first wife Myra: daughter Katherine "Kas" Fidler of Sparks, Nev., sons James Linscott (Julie) and Roger Linscott (Sharal) of Reno, Nev. He is survived by 7 grandchildren, including Sheryl "Sheri" Brown (Jeffrey), Steven Fidler (Melissa), Kristen Fisher (Rick), Coleen O'Shea (Michael Breu), Wendy Hammond (Mitch), Jeffrey Linscott (Alexa), and Joseph Linscott (Kade Rogers), and 11 great grandchildren: Erik Brown, David Brown, Ashley Fidler, Dillon Fidler, Haeden Sambrano, Emily Fisher, Caitlin O'Shea, Elizabeth Hammond, Daniel Hammond, Abigail Hammond, and Francesca Linscott. He also leaves a host of wonderful nieces and nephews.

Family members thank Jack's primary care physician, Dr. Molly Torvinen, her office staff, and the great nurses and doctors at the Northern Nevada Medical Center for their professionalism and care during Jack's closing.

As Jack wished, there is no funeral or service planned. An inurnment memorium will be conducted at a later date at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Smith Valley.  Family and friends are invited to sign his online guest book at www.FRFH.net .
