James Robert O'Banion passed away at his home in Wellington, Nevada on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. He was 89.
James was born January 9, 1928 in Los Angeles, California the son of Curtis and Mary (Wilson) O'Banion. He was a WW2 veteran having served in the U.S. Navy.
James was the only commercial trout grower in the State of Nevada. He was an alfalfa grower for 61 years in Smith Valley. His true Love was raising fish. "If you look at the fish, they will tell you what they need. You have to listen with your eyes, because they won't actually talk to you, of course." He enjoyed ocean fishing and hunting. He was secretary of the US Trout Growers Association. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club, Sertoma, Smith Valley Historical Society, a life member of the National Rifle Association and Smith Valley Baptist Church.
He is survived by his Wife, Carole; his son, Scott O'Banion, Reno, NV and his brother, William O'Banion, IL, step-children, Brian Thoroughman, Phoenix, AZ, David Thoroughman, Reno, NV, and Lisa Thoroughman-Bralla, San Diego, CA; William grandchildren, Tim O'Banion, Kimberly O'Banion-Toconita, Todd O'Banion and Gina O'Banion Strasser. Great grandchildren, Matthew, Payton, Axle, Hope, Miles, Ashley, Nicholas and Madison.
James's Memorial Service will be held 3:00 pm Saturday, April 22, 2017 at the Smith Valley Baptist Church in Smith with Pastor Travis Walker officiating.
