Obituary

John Marion Hoover passed away Wednesday morning, March 10, 2010 at the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada. He was 79.

John was born in Kearney, Nebraska on October 30, 1930 the son of John and Viva Viola (Salle) Hoover, he was the 'baby' of 13 children and was always called 'Jr.' by his big brothers and sisters. After his parents died when he was 13, John lived with various family members, finally settling in with his newlywed brother, Bob and sister-in-law Terry in Reno, Nevada. After much thought and discussion it was decided that John was to join the military. Underweight, Terry sent him on the bus that day with water and banana's in order to gain weight he needed to enlist. Needless to say he made weight and was soon stationed at Mitchell Feild Air Force Base in Garden City, New York from where he was given an honorable discharge in 1952 as a Staff Sgt.
There he met his future first wife, Jane, where she was working as a cashier in a small store in town. They were married and lived in Baldwin, New York. He worked many different jobs which included Armoured Carrier, Baldwin Fire Department dispatcher and supervisor. He also went on through the ranks to become Captain of the Baldwin Volunteer Fire Department at Truck One. John and Jane had three children, John, Michael and Ellen. After a number of years John met and fell in love with Caroline, they were married and enjoyed 40 years of marriage and their daughter Suzanne was born of this union. After leaving New York, John, Caroline and Suzanne moved to Yerington, Nevada to build John's dream home and have the horse's he always wanted. They have lived here for over 25 years. John was active in community activities which included being President of the Kiwanis Club. John and Caroline shared the love of traveling in their Motor Home. John suffered a stroke in 1995 which confined him to a wheelchair. In spite of this he maintained his strong love for his family and his wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed being a NY Jets and NY Mets fan. He was also an avid NASCAR fan. John was also enjoyed puzzles which he has many framed at home.
