Obituary
Joseph Peter Gill, 87, of Yerington, Nevada, passed away quietly at his daughter's home in Yerington, surrounded by his family, on Sunday afternoon, November 29, 2009. He was 87.
Pete, as he was known, was born on November 19, 1922 in Bayonne, New Jersey. He served proudly in the US Navy during WWII aboard the battleship USS Arkansas, as a Gunner's Mate. He was present at the Invasion of North Africa, the Invasion of Italy and the Normandy Invasion. While in the Navy, Pete met Alice Geiger and they were married shortly after in New Jersey. After his discharge from the Navy the couple and their young son moved west to Bingham Canyon, Utah, where Pete began his career as a heavy equipment operator. A daughter and another son were born while in Utah. From there, the couple made their home in Weed Heights, NV. Two more daughters made the family complete. They lived in Weed Heights for 17 years till they moved to the north end of Mason Valley. Pete enjoyed his family the most, but also enjoyed the outdoors, loved hunting and fishing and his horses. He loved the cowboy lifestyle. Pete retired in 1976 to be the greatest Grandpa and Pappa Pete to his family and will be sorely missed. He is preceeded in death by his Wife, Alice, of 52 years.
He is survived by a sister, Joan Carey, of Florida and five children: Pete (Debi) Gill of Pioche, NV, Pam Gill of Reno, NV, Mike (Lori) Gill of Spring Creek, NV, Cathy (Joe) Acciari of Smith Valley, NV, and Trish (Mark) Chidwick of Yerington. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren and 18 Great Grandchildren.
Pete's Memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, December 5th, 2009 at the Holy Family Catholic Church 37 North West Street Yerington. After the memorial service a gathering will be held at his daughter's home 201 S. Oregon Street Yerington.
