Joseph E. Giomi passed peacefully to join his wife, AnnaBelle, on November 7, 2007 at SLMC.
Joe was born in the Mason Valley on March 10, 1918 the son of Frank and Cherabina. He went to Bartlett School, and yes he had to walk the five miles there and back. In 1936 he played in the legendary State football game where Yerington upset Las Vegas and then broke the half mile track record and kept it from 1937 to 1968. He is remembered in the Yerington Hall of Fame. Joe attended the UNR on a football scholarship and pledged Phi Sigma Kappa. He bacame the all state tackle. His brother John and he exchanged positions, one of the ranch and the other at UNR in order to complete their educations. The brothers bought the ranch after graduation and quickly discovered they did not have enough milk to support their families. In 1948 they bought the Central Mercantile in Smith Valley and later expanded their busniss to include a John Deere dealership in 1953. In 1950 Joe married AnnaBelle McVicar and started a family. He became deeply involved in community activities which included building the Catholic Church, became a member of the volunteer fire department, the 20/30 club and was recently honored as being the last living charter member of the Smith Valley Rotary. Other than his family, sports was the other great love of his life. Joe umpired little league baseball games and ran the measuring chains for all SV Bulldog football games. In 1969 Joe and his brother John sold their business and he became manager of the Nevada Haygrowers Assoc. During his management, the association never lost a dime in the sale of hay. Becoming a reborn Christian was in Joe's opinion, his greatest joy. He served as president of the Christian Businessman's Assoc. and founded Grace Christian Fellowship Church where he served as minister. AnnaBelle and Joe were inspirational Christian leaders and sevants of the Lord Jesus.
He is survived and greatly missed by daughters, JoAnne (Steve) McKnight, Loretta (Jim) Safford, Diana Lawrence and Katherine Giomi. His grandchildren C.J. and Melissa Safford and MacKenzie Dahl, his nephews John (Pat) Giomi, Joe Giomi and nieces Patti (Ron) Dohoney and Dorothy Golightly.
