Obituary

Josephine Groso Farias passed away peacefully in the early hours of October 20, 2013 at the age of 91 of causes incident to her age. She died at home in Smith Valley, Nevada with the 24/7 loving care of her children and devoted care givers. She is together again with Lester, her husband, flying in a shinny new Cessna on assignment from god to patrol the heavens. Josephine was born on November 12, 1921 the fourth of eight children all born in Smith Valley to Carlos and Maria Groso. Jo attended Smith Valley schools where she met and married her high school classmate, sweetheart and true love, Lester M. Farias. Jo and Lester married soon after graduation and began farming in Smith Valley. They were blessed with three children, Vickie, Ellis and Leslie. Jo was a loving mom who provided a very happy home life. Her primary focus was always the kids but she found time to be the designated ranch cook and community postmaster. She and Lester encouraged, supported and somehow found ways to finance the children in all of their ambitions. Jo and Lester were game (all-in) for any new challenge in the farming industry that could have posibbly provided a better lifestyle for the family. Some of their experiments just didn't pan out such as raising pigs, turkeys and chickens. These endeavors were labor intensive, nasty and proved unprofitable. However, these two never lost direction or determination. Jo and Lester went on to create successful onion, garlic and alfalfa business that were second to none. As a team the Farias' planned, developed, managed and owned the Farias Wheel Airport in Smith Valley, including the adjacent subdivision which was zoned for residential housing with individual aircraft hangers on each parcel. they were true entrepreneurs ahead of their time.

Josephine lived a long full life never expressing any regrets. she was an active officer in the local PTA and influential member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She enjoyed her regular bridge game for over sixty years with her lifelong Smith Valley girlfriends. A dedicated and accomplished cross word puzzle participant, she rarely missed completing the Reno Gazette Journal's daily puzzel. Jo was the family speech writer and assisted with homework and book reports, etc., but she could also become a knowledgeable critic. Josphine and Lester loved to play music together, she on the piano and he on the accordian. They could and would dance the jig, tango or waltz when they had a mind to. Josephine was Basque and proud of her heritage, she spoke fluent Spanish and voluntarily tutored the local Mexican children in the English language. Additionally, she would schedule and attend local Mexican families doctor's appointments, teacher and student conferences and assit with their legal matters. Jo was their devoted interpreter, confidant, advisor and friend.

Josephine was matriarch, guardian and "go to" person for the family and remained fiercly loyal to her siblings. Jo faced death as she lived life, with style, dignity and grace. This lady will be terribly missed by those who loved and knew her.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband Lester in 1994, her parents, sister, Mary Cardinal, brothers, Ernest Groso and Charles Groso. Josephine's memory will live on forever in the hearts of son Ellis (Dianne) Farias, daughters, Victoria (Fred) Wedow and Leslie Farias, grandsons, Conrad Wright and Brandon Wright, granddaughters, Jaime (Robert) Lee, Elizabeth Ichord, Meghan (Todd) Hardesty and Lori (Gerald) Gallaspy, great granddaughter, Faris Wright, sisters, Rufina Aguirre, Juanita Morace, Carmen (Harold) Farias, Brother, Angelo Groso and numerous nieces and nephews.

The extended family wishes to thank Gabriela Castaneda, her daughters, Yessica and Estephanie for the personal care and unyielding dedication each woman extended to Josephine during her last years. They were a Godsend for which we are forever greatful. The comfort, security and love Gabriela's family so willingly gave to Josephine is impossible to express. REST IN PEACE, MOM.

Following Josephine's wishes, no formal memorial service will be held. She instructed that her ashes were to be spread over the Pine Nut Mountain range. Jo designated a certain area/location due west of their Farias Wheel Ranch. This is a special view from their home that they loved so much. In lieu of flowers, she would be proud of any donations made in her name to the Heritage House in Smith Valley, PO Box 23, Smith, NV 89430.
