Leona Delores Keeley passed away on Friday afternoon, May 28, 2010 at the Evergreen Convalescent Home in Carson City, Nevada. She was 85.
Leona was born in Sweetwater, Nevada on September 19, 1924 the daughter of Willie and Dolly (Summers) Sam. The old Sweetwater school was where she began her education and later in life attended the Stewart Indian School. She was an enrolled member of the Yerington Paiute Tribe. She was a fluent speaker of the Paiute language and knowledgeable of the oral history of the Sweetwater area, Leona enjoyed reminiscing about various adventures.
She married Walter Keeley on November 12, 1946. They enjoyed ranching on various ranches in the local area. Togeather they prospected amoung the mountains and gathered traditional foods as she was taught by her elders. Leona enjoyed sewing and quilt making.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by numerous family members.
A Memorial service will be held 12:00 (Noon) Saturday, June 26th at the Yerington Tribal Gym.
