Charles Leroy Kay died from injuries received during the main event race at the Reno Fernley Raceway near Fernley, Nevada on Saturday evening, May 25, 2013. He was 67.
Leroy was born in Oakdale, California on October 17, 1945 the son of Jet and Mabel (Askew) Kay. Leroy was an Army Veteran having served during the Vietnam War.
As a very young man he began core drilling in Nevada and started his own core drilling company in 1980.
Leroy grew to become a passionate motorcycle racer. After retiring, Leroy began racing dwarf cars. His love of racing and his fun loving and adventurous spirit rewarded him with a large and loyal group of friends.
Leroy is survived by longtime girlfriend, Donna MacGill; his son, Darrin (Jill) Kay of Yerington, Step-sons, Randy (Tracy) MacGill of Maryland, Eric (Tracie) MacGill of Reno; his step-grandchildren, Leroy's best buddy, Chase, Kali, Ivan, Cleo and Madison; his brothers, Bob (Lorraine), Jim, Frank (Carlene), Richard (Dene), David (Justine) and Donnie. Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Patricia McLaughlin and a brother, John Kay.
A celebration of Leroy's life will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, June 2nd at the Casino West Convention Center, 11 North Main Street, Yerington. A reception will follow the service at the convention center.
