Obituary
Lorraine Borba Scatena passed away at the South Lyon Medical Center, Long Term Care in Yerington on Thursday morning, December 29, 2011. She was 87.
Lorraine was born in San Rafael, California on February 18, 1924 the daughter of immigrant parents from Sao Jorge Island, Azores Islands, Joseph and Eugenia Borba. She had married Louis G. Scatena on October 14, 1960. They had two children, a son Louis Vincent Scatena and a daughter, Eugenia.
Lorraine is a graduate of Dominican University in San Rafael, California and also attended University of California, Berkeley. She taught school at the Fairfax Elementary School in Marin County, California and 1953 - 56 at an elementary school for military dependents at Mainz on the Rhine Germany. Lorraine's unpublished poetry has been written for special occasions and practical reasons. She was a Poetry presenter at the World Congress on Arts and Communications, Lisbon, Portugal in 1999, Washington D.C. in 2000, St. John's College and Cambridge University in 2001 and Vancouver, B.C., Canada in 2002. Lorraine was President of Nevada branch of American Association of American Women, 1981 - 1983. She was also active in the National Organization for Women. Lorraine testified at the Nevada legislature and the US Congress on Women's issues. As a member of the Nevada State Commission, she testified before the State Senate and Legislature for the Nevadans for equal rights amendment, 1975 - 78. she was the Nevada representative at the first White House Conference for Rural American Women in Washington, D.C. in 1980.
She is survived by her two children and her two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Louis in 1995.
A Rosary will be recited 1:30 pm Friday, January 6, 2012 followed by the Funeral Mass at 2:00 pm at Holy Family Catholic Church, 103 North West Street, Yerington. A lunch will be provided by the St. Anne's Guild following the service. Burial will be at the family plot at Valley View Cemetery.
