Obituary

Legendary high school coach Mario (Mike) Lommori passed away on June 4, 2021. He was 83.

Mike was born June 15, 1937 in a small ranch house just outside of Yerington.  He was the youngest of six children born to Luigi and Marianna Lommori, Italian immigrants from Lucca, Italy.  Mike developed a love of fishing and hunting in his youth, as his older brothers and cousins would often let him tag along with them.  He developed a good work ethic while working on the family ranch.

Mike attended the Yerington schools where he became a stand out athlete. He competed in football, basketball, and track and field. He played on the 1953 and 1954 state championship teams and was named All-State fullback for both those years. After graduation, he attended the University of Nevada at Reno where he was a four year starter on the football team. Not only was he an outstanding running back, he was also the fourth ranked punter in the nation. In track and field, he was a Far Western Conference champion in the discus.

In July 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Clarice, and in 1960, he graduated with his teaching degree and took a teaching position in Yerington. He began his career as the assistant football coach and soon became the head coach. He served as the head football coach for 16 years winning eight conference championships and three state titles.  He was three times voted the Coach of the Year.

Wanting to keep his football players in shape, he started the wrestling program in 1966. It took about four years to turn Yerington into a wrestling powerhouse. They won State AA championships 12 of 13 years and had a 107 consecutive dual match winning streak over a nine year period. They entered many tournaments in Nevada and California. They were hugely successful, winning many titles against much larger schools.  Mike also assisted coaching the weight events in track and field. His athletes in the shot put and discus won many conference titles and still hold school records.

1n 1993, he was elected into the Nevada Hall of Fame. In 2007, he was voted into both the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame.

In 1989, he retired from coaching and teaching. He spent his retirement hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling with his family and friends. He was active in the Catholic Church, especially the Italian Catholic Federation, and enjoyed visiting the residents of the long term care facility.

Mike is survived by his wife, Clarice, of nearly 64 years, son Michael (Vicki) Lommori, daughter Shelly (Jim) Kindness, grandchildren Alexx (Rob) Seipp, Kaylee (Micah) Hancock, Camryn, Quinn and Aidan O'Neil, Bailey and Courtney Kindness; great grandchildren Carter and McKinley Seipp, sisters Jeanette Cunningham, Nancy Koehler, sister-in-law Bessie Lommori and several nieces and nephews.

A Rosary will be held 6:00 pm Thursday, June 10 at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 103 North West Street Yerington.  Mike's Funeral Service will be held 11:00 Friday, June 11th at the Yerington Intermediate School Gym (Old Gym), 215 Pearl Street Yerington and burial will be in the family plot at Valley View Cemetery.  A reception will follow the service to be held at the Pioneer Crossing Convention Center.
