Norman "Putter" Pursel slipped peacefully from this life after a long struggle with the affects of advancing age. He was 88.
Norman was born in Yerington on March 3, 1924 to Emmett and Marie Sloan Pursel. He spent his youth attending Yerington schools and graduated from Yerington High School in 1943. He was very active in the Future Farmers Association and participated in athletics.
Following high school, he enlisted in the Navy on December 1, 1943 where he spent most of his enlistment aboard the cruiser class USS Raleigh in the Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in February 1946.
He married Norma Giorgi on December 28, 1947 and they moved to San Luis Obispo, CA shortly after where Norman enrolled in Agriculture Engineering at the California State College. The young couple moved back to Nevada in 1951 where he took a job at the Hawthorne Army Depot. In 1952, he and Norma moved back to Yerington where he went to work for the newly opened Anaconda Copper Mine in Weed Heights. He worked there until 1969 when he had the opportunity to go to work for Sierra Pacific Power Company (NV Energy). He worked there until he retired in 1989. He continued to pursue his interests in farming and ranching on the family farm south of Yerington. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his time gardening and working with livestock. He was a friend to many and enjoyed sharing his produce around the valley. He was a proud member of Operating Engineers Local #3 and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers 1245.
He is survived by two sons, Del(Jill) Pursel of Fallon and Jim (Vicki) Pursel of Minden, 6 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Baldo(Sandy) Giorgi of Topaz, CA, sisters-in law Maxine Giorgi of Camarillo, CA and Florence Giorgi of Yerington and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Norma in 2008.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Monday, October 15, 2012 at the Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will be at the Valley View Cemetery, Yerington.
