Phyllis Matheus died peacefully on Thursday morning, March 6, with her family at her side at the South Lyon Medical Center, Yerington. She was 89.
Phyllis was born in Yerington on February 28, 1919 the daughter of Oscar and Annetta Stallard. She attended school in Smith Valley and Mason Valley, and graduated from Yerington H.S.. She retired from Lyon County 28 years ago as the county's first director of Social Services. Phyllis was very community minded and had authored a book called "The Valleys of the Walker Rivers". She was chosen with her husband, Frank as Pioneers of the Year in 1988 and was chosen Woman of the Year in 1996 by the Soroptomist Club. She was a faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Ann's Guild, a member of AARP, the local retired Public Employees of Nevada Group and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxillary. Besides authoring her book her proudest achievement was having her essay of 'Memories of Old Yerington and Later Years' placed in the Yerington centennial time capsule.
She is survived by her daughters, Marian (Harvey) Pinkerton of Yerington, and Janet Matheus of Utah; her sons, Delbert (Sharon) of Yerington and Jim (Karen) of Battle Mountain; by her daughter in law Faith Roberts of Arizona; and by her numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; by her sisters Betty Bryan, Pauline (Basil) Quilici, Edna Tracy and her brother Bill (Helen) Leveille. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents and step-father Ed Leveille; her sister, Gladys and her sons Francis, Daniel and David.
A rosary will be recited 7:00 pm Thursday, March 13th at Holy Family Catholic Church. The funeral mass will be 11:00 am Friday, March 14th at Holy Family Catholic Church 37 North West Street Yerington. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery.
