Obituary

Ralph Harold Karnes passed away peacefully at his home in Yerington, Nevada with his family by his side on Tuesday, January 29, 2013. Ralph was 85.

Ralph was born in Grandview, Arkansas on September 30, 1927 the son of Austin and Lily Mae (nee: Thompson) Karnes, he was one of six children. He graduated from Berryville High School, where he excelled academically and athletically while working on the family farm. Upon graduation, Ralph joined the Army National Guard and fought in the Korean War. He received the United Nations Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars. He had married Virgie Stidham in 1950 and they had one daughter, Deborah. Ralph held many jobs but spent most of his career constructing pipelines all over the United States, including major projects in the Reno/Tahoe area. He was a respected member of the UA Local 350 Plumbers & Pipefitters Union.

Ralph had lived in the Yerington area for the past 16 years. He enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing and loved to spend time with his family. You could always count on Ralph to be there in a crisis. He was also known for his sharp mind, big hands, deep voice and captivating storytelling.

Ralph is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Virgie; his daughter Deborah and her husband John Dibble; his brother, Walter and sister, Wilma Atchley; his grandchildren, Joseph Dibble and James Dibble; his great grandchildren, Jared Dibble and Naomi Dibble. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Gerald and sisters, Wanda Berner, and Virginia Warren.

Ralph's memorial service will be held 11:00 am, Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Freitaas Rupracht Funeral Home 25 Hwy 208 Yerington, with Pastor Milton Carr officiating. His cremated remains will be inurned at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley at a later date.
