Rufus J. McCain, also known as RJ, Mac or most often, Pops, passed away at his son & daughter-in-law's home in Yerington, Nevada while visiting on Friday, July 14, 2017. He was 92.
Rufus was born in Compton, California on November 24, 1924 the son of Albert and Alma McCain. Much of his youth was spent working with his Dad in the family owned well drilling business. It was there where he developed the skills to fix just about anything and keep the machinery going.
At the age of 18 he enlisted in the US Army Air Force and was in the 79th Airdrome Squadron. With his much needed abilities he was offered the opportunity to run a traveling welding shop and found himself setting up shop all over the south pacific, fixing most any piece of equipment they could break and inventing some new ones along the way. Shortly after his discharge in 1945 he returned to California and looked up his first love, Frances Owsley. It took a little bit of effort but before too long it turned into a serious courtship. They were married in Las Vegas on May 11, 1953. The next three years were filled with fun and travels until April 1956 when their first and only child was born. They were living in San Jose at the time and a few months later they moved to Santa Cruz. They bought a little house on the west side and he went to work at the cement plant in Davenport until he retired in 1987. Rufus was very active in the Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge.
Rufus is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Yhonie of Yerington, NV, as well as many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Forbes and Weldon and his sister, Fern and his wife, Frances in 2005.
No service is planned. His cremated remains will be laid to rest next to the love of his life, Frances at the Santa Cruz Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to sign his online guest book at
