James Russell Gilman Jr. passed away Renown Medical Center, Reno on Saturday, August 30th, 2014, just a few days shy of his 85th birthday.
He was born in Pasadena California on September 10, 1929 the son of James Russell Gilman and Viola Roath. He was married in 1958 on February 22nd to Mary Elizabeth Barstow (Betty) and had two children Nancy and Carol.
Russ Gilman lived in Reno, Nevada and worked as a manager in the warehousing industry then retired in Yerington. He had many interests, hobbies and talents. One of his lifelong interests was a love of reading and books, which lead to his opening "Bonanza Books" on Main St. in Yerington. Russ loved the desert, minerals, date nails, all things Nevada! He had a passion for coins, cigars, pipes, art, J. S Bach, chopping wood and growing tomatoes.
He was born with an incredible musical talent and was a self taught jazz pianist. He composed his own songs, played in bands all over California and years later was given the opportunity to have his CD's produced by the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation.
He is survived by his wife Betty (whom he loved with all his heart), daughters Nancy and Carol, sons-in-law Dan Marfisi and Guy Farmer, and his two grandchildren Linda and Chris Marfisi.
In keeping with his wishes there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers donations in his name may be made to the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation 41 Sutter St. PMB 1870, San Francisco CA 94104.
