Wayne R. Monahan known by many as "Grandpa", passed away at his home in Yerington, Nevada on June 4, 2020. He was 82 years 11 months.
Wayne was born weighing 13 pounds in West Line Township, (Lucan), Minnesota on June 28, 1937 at home. The Youngest son to Robert (RC) and Caroline (Bolster) Monahan. He was the youngest child of Seven.
Wayne joined the US Navy at in 1954 at 17 after attending St. Mary's Catholic school. He served first in the deck force then as a cook and baker for 3.5 years and recieved the China Service Metal. He was a Korean War Veteran and was Honorably discharged in 1958. He was a life Member of the VFW post 8084 and member of the American Legion post 9
While serving his country he met his future wife of 55 years and married her after she had proposed to him in1957 in Los Angeles California. He was a Sailor and reminded her of Popeye. He attended welding school and began a long career as a heavy equipment mechanic and welder, who could fix or build just about anything out of metal. In 1985 he changed his primary career to truck driving and became a Soul Proprietor of his Owner Operator Trucking Company. He worked with his eldest son and with the help of both his sons and Grandsons, repaired and maintained his trucks and equipment. He retired at 80 years old when his body and lungs could not go any more. He was a lifetime member of the OOIDA (Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association)
Over the years prior to his trucking career he moved his family around the country. After his eldest daughter was born in California, they moved to Minnesota. Then after the birth and premature death of his first born son. They moved back to California. He and his wife had their 2nd son. Then in 1966 moved to Alaska for a year. In 1972 they moved up to Nevada. His yougest son was born. Then a few years later they moved back to Minnesota. In 1980 he and his wife and youngest son moved back to Nevada. They located to Yerington in 1981 where they purchased their home and build a small farm and with the help of his youngest son raised horses, calves, chicken, and sheep.
Wayne enjoyed fishing with his sons and grandsons. He also attended most of his grandsons sporting events earning the name of grandpa by many in the community. He was a wonderful Grandfather and a good father. His lesson he taught all was work hard if you want something because there are no hand outs in life. He was a valued source for mechanical advice.
He is predeceased by his wife Ellie, son Patrick, daughter Diane, and parents and 5 siblings. He was the last Grandson of a Civil War Veteran and immigrant from Ireland. He is survived by sons, Wayne S. (Maria) Monahan, Daniel J. (Judy) Monahan; His sister Kathy Baune, brother in laws, Arthur (Alice) Brown, sister in laws Pat Rusher and Shirley (Dave) Bechtel; his 4 grandsons and granddaughter and three great grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews and adopted grandchildren. Wayne's Rosary service will be held 10:00 am Monday, July 27th followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 am at Holy Family Catholic Church. His cremated remains will be buried at the family plot at Valley View Cemetery.
